Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other peripheral nerve problems

Conditions that are caused by compression to the nerves of the hand and upper limb are regularly seen, assessed and treated at the London Hand and Wrist Unit. Nerves may be compressed as they run through anatomical tunnels and grooves in their course from the neck to the hand.

One such condition is carpal tunnel syndrome.

The London Hand and Wrist Unit offers a One Stop Carpal Tunnel Clinic. For information click here.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome presentation can include:

  • Waking at night with tingling and numbness in the part of the hand that gets its nerve supply from the median nerve (follow link below for a diagram)
  • Symptoms that can radiate up the forearm towards the elbow
  • Daytime aggravation of symptoms by increased use of the hand
  • Functional impairment if there is significant loss of feeling (sensation)
  • Increased swelling in the hand

Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be conservative (non surgical) or surgical. Both of these treatments are available at the London Hand and Wrist Unit.
